In 2012, Julie collaborated with certified trainers and the rescue community to come up with a Positive Solution to the problem of seeing dogs adopted but being returned… knowing that if people had a support system to get them through the first few weeks, the revolving door would stop and more dogs would stay in their homes.

Working closely with Pat Rattray and Rebecca Cann, the book “Adopting a Dog?” was written to give people a step-by-step plan that they could follow.  Combined with Sound Therapy music composed by her husband, Bruce Oscar (musician and on-air radio host for WDCB 90.9FM), it provides easy-to-follow exercises designed to build a BOND that will last a lifetime.

The next step came in 2014 when the A Sound Beginning Program was born.

What began with the book expanded to include group classes and 1-1 training services, providing additional support for adopters.

In 2022, Julie retired from training and began a not-for-profit, Positive Solutions for A Sound Beginning.

With the help of a dedicated board and outstanding volunteers, she now dedicates her time to provide education and training for animal rescue organizations, teaching the people who care for a dog’s physical and emotional well-being.

Following positive training methods based on proven science that never uses force or fear, stress is reduced, trust is created, and the outcome of adoptability increases - ultimately preventing dogs from being returned.
